General questions

What is the purpose of cancer registration?

In order to recognize cancer earlier, to improve treatment or to prevent cancer, precise data about cancer occurence and development is required.

Why should I agree with the registration of my data?

At least 90 percent of all new diseases must be registered to make valid assumptions on cancer occurence and the course of the disease. Your help is needed to obtain significant data about cancer diseases.

How does cancer registration help cancer patients themselves?

Cancer patients benefit from the fact that their therapy is built on the collected knowledge by the cancer registration, e.g. 'in which stage is the breast-conserving surgery successful in the long-term?' Cancer registries are instruments for quality assurance because all involved physicians can survey their treatment in the long run. Furthermore, cancer registries support the cooperation of all physicians of different fields.

Is it necessary to sign a declaration of consent?

No, it is not necessary. However, the Bavarian Cancer Registry Law gives you the right to opt out from a permanent storage of your data.

Is my data secure?

The cancer information is secured by strict data protection mechanisms. A permanent access to your name and your address is only possible within the Trust Centre. Other parts of the cancer registry may only use pseudonyms, which are hiding the real names of patients.

Is data registered throughout Bavaria?

Since 1st of January 2002, data of all Bavarian districts and independent towns are being recorded, after a four year long development phase with only one part of Bavaria's area being recorded.

What kind of data is recorded?

The amount of the data stored is precisely regulated in the Bavarian Cancer Registry Law. The Bavarian Cancer Registry is using the German wide common oncological record format. The most important information is:

  • Information about the diseased person (gender, date of birth, place of residence)
  • Information about the tumor (time of the first diagnose, location and stage of the tumor, histological finding)
  • Information about the treatment and course of disease
  • In case of death: information about cause and time of death

Where do I get information about data that is stored regarding myself?
